                                                                       COUNTRY SIDE

In the slant of the sun on the country-side,
Twilight shines bright on the on-coming tide.
Along the meadow or on the vast plain
Cattle and sheep trail home all over the lane;
And the farmers returning home with hoes on their shoulders,
If they are tired they'll sit down to rest on some boulders .

" Night is approaching ! Night is approaching ! "
Sings a sea bird before departing .
" We must reach home ere before the dusk is here .
For we must be at home and we must be there
." My babies are hungry, I cannot stay.
Tarry us not with your evening songs , I pray."

Slowly along the path some prowlers plod along
While walking they sing a strange , old song.
Soon a slip of the moon hangs over the plain .
And the autumn wind is blowing the ripening grain.
On a night like this peace descends to us from above ,
From heaven to us down below like a dove .

No Time
*
What is this life if full of care
We have no time to stand and stare ?

No time to stay  beneath a tree ,
And watch the birds fly by so free.

No time to stop by a fashion shop
And  shop until we say stop .

No time to chew our food and savour its taste
Often we shallow maggy mee in haste .

No time to stop and say hello
We often rush pass our country fellows .

No time to sleep till morning birds sing
Sometimes till dawn we never sleep a wink.

No time to read comics or watch TV
Because our workload is ever so heavy .

No time to the flowered -meadows we stray
Because they are out of the way.

No time to see the night sky full of stars
Because we are busy watching film stars.

A dull life this if full of care.
We have no time to stand and stare.
*
( A thousand apologies to W.H.Davies for having adapted his poem.
*
Because , like him , we too ,have no time to stand and stare.)
