Padi

The Padi Field in Penampang of Yore

To a farmer, to have a piece of padi
field is eualvalent to having a
long term rice bowl for the family .
Working in the padi field involves
every member of the family.

A plough , drawned by a buffalo ,
is the traditional method of
ploughing the field .

Nowadays , a tractor is used by most
farmers .

When it is planting time , the padi
seedlings are gathered from
the nursery and planted by hands .

This is a popular planting song :

Planting rice is never fun
Bend from morn till set of sun
Never stand and never sit
Never rest a little bit.

Later , when the padi gradually ripens,
the children are Put in charge of scaring
away the birds, the rats and other pests ,
although scare crows are also used.

Harvesting comes . All hands are needed !
Sometimes the method gotong royong
which means working together as a team ,
is practiced in the kampung or village .

Tanjung Aru Beach

In Tanjung Aru Beach I met ,
The only girl I never forget,
When everyday and every night,
I was in Tanjung Aru Beach.

Until at last she said good bye,
She kissed my lips and then she cried.
Her dropping tears that broke my heart,
I was in Tanjung Aru Beach.

Tanjung Aru Beach near
Kota Kinabalu of
long ago was much sung about.

SUNSUKUNG VILLAGE

Actually , a lot of people consider a meal of rice , a luxury ; at least it is to
the people of Sunsukung .Marudu , Sabah .Only once a month , do they eat rice .

Sunsukung ,situated 100 kilometer from town , is a small village in the middle of nowhere . It is inaccessible to the outside world , as it is so far from any main road . The people there , untill recently ,lived on the brink of primitive life,

They hunt wild animals such as deers , wild pigs , wild goats , and birds for food . The womenfolk gather wild leaves , fruits and berries from the near by jungle ..Fish are plentiful in the river . They plant root vegetables such as yam , sweet potato and tapioca which can satisfy their hunger . Maize and hill rice are also planted as subsistance food crops.

According to Andand , the village headman , the reason why they do not plant a lot of hill rice is because of the pests such as birds and rats that continously eat up their food crop . despite their constant care. which exhaust their energy . That's why they rather plant less , which they can take good care of and not waste their energy to feed the birds.

The peasants only plant rice during rainy season when the ground is wet. They usually get only a sack of rice from each harvest. This they eat frugally for use to cook porridge so that young and old can enjoy this delicious meal once a month.

The village folk practise shifting cultivation . They clear the forest by burning it to the ground .The burnt soil is rich and black , thus no fertilizers is needed . They plant hill rice on this piece of ground. While waiting for the hill rice to grow , they grow secondary crops that can yield harvest very fast such as vegetables . This crop also act as a cover crop for the hill rice. After the field is used several times and has lost its fertility , a new piece of ground has to be cleared.Shifting cultivaton is said to cause soil erosion .

Recently, the government helps the village folk by building new huts for them and provide them with black and white televisions. Thus they can see the outside world through TV Channel one and channel two .
